‘One Number Away’ goes Platinum
Tuesday was a celebration of music milestones for Luke Brian and co-writers Sammy Mitchell, Steven Battey and Robert Williford. ‘One Number Away’ was the reason for the celebrations, and for the standing-room-only crowd at the Number One party at the Sutler Basement in Nashville. ‘One Number Away’ is Luke’s third Number One and the third cut from his debut full-length album, ‘This One’s For You.’ The party was hosted jointly by ASCAP, BMI and SESAC.
In a previous interview Luke said, “We aren’t supposed to be here yet.” Hmmmm… let’s check out the stats. In the last 30 days: Recognized the success of Luke’s three number one singles. Debut single ‘Hurricane’ has been certified 3x Platinum while the next follow-up, ‘When It Rains It Pours’ was certified 2x Platinum. Meanwhile, ‘One Number Away’ was certified Platinum and album track ‘Beautiful Crazy’ was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
First No. 1 for Robert Williford
First up to podium to kick off the awards and kudos (after the press conference) was BMI’s Leslie Roberts. She was so excited to be presenting their songwriter Robert Williford with his beautiful Taylor Guitar to celebrate his first number one.
From the stage they told the story of how he moved here then moved away and came back again in three years. It was his destiny for sure.
The next celebrated BMI writer was Luke himself. Luke took the podium to thank everyone there for their continued support and believing in him. Also, previously mentioned from the stage that Luke’s album cut (Not a single YET? lol), ‘Beautiful Crazy’ has already gone Gold (Over 500,000 sales). Luke’s debut album has broken records and created milestones.
Luke had also celebrated previously at an event on August 13th hosted by his label, River House/Columbia, part of the Sony Music Nashville family. The industry gathering included his co-writers, label and management team, and friends. He was honored with several plaques, that covered the stage — recognizing his platinum selling singles and the success of his debut album, ‘This One’s For You.’ It was announced that it is the most streamed country album of 2018 achieving more than 1 billion streams.
First Country No. 1 for Steven Battey
ASCAP’s Beth Brinker lit up the room when she came up to the stage to brag about their songwriter Steven Battey. Steven has a long list of cuts by music royalty including Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber, BOYZ II MEN, 50 Cent (The list goes on and on) and now his FIRST country NUMBER ONE single with Luke Combs!
He came to Nashville from LA specially to write for the Country genre. Congrats Steven you did it for ‘One Number Away!’

SESAC’s ET Brown was next up to praise their writer Sammy Mitchell. Sammy went to Belmont and this is his first number one in the country market. Since this album is a Gold (500,000 sales) and platinum (1,000,000) according to SoundScan, ‘One Number Away’ is the 4th most played song for 2018. You could see the ‘Moment’ look in Sammy’s eyes as they piled on the kudos. So happy for him.
Also getting shout outs from the stage were Columbia’s Records Radio Promo team, Luke’s manager Kappy and John Zarling, Vice President, Marketing & New Business, Sony Music Nashville. “You have a lot of time to reflect on things,” noted Luke as he spoke humbly to the crowd. “I had absolutely nothing going on (he smiles) and they let me cut this song.” Wonderful ending to a wonderful celebration.
